Diriyyah
Diriyyah e' sem duvida a grande atraccao de Riade. Indo de carro fica a pouco mais de vinte minutos do meu hotel. Ao que parece foi aqui que tudo comecou. Historicamente esta vila e' a base da familia real saudita, os Al-Saud, e foi tambem a partir daqui que se deu a conquista da peninsula arabica que levou 'a formacao do reino como hoje o conhecemos.
Segundo consta a cidade foi fundada em 1446 (pouco mais velha que Goa). A cidade prosperou e ganhou importancia. Infelizmente, em 1816 na sequencia da guerra com o Imperio Otomono a cidade foi destruida, a populacao dispersada e os lideres executados.
Hoje Diriyyah (a velha) e' um ponto de interesse historico. Logo a entrada ha' uma mesquita, imponente, e bonita. A parte nova da cidade nao tem grande historia.
A cidade e' como se ve. As casas sao feitas de argila, terreas, e frescas. Algumas ha' que tentam ter um segundo andar, mas a estrutura e' demasiado fragil para aguentar com o peso adicional. No entanto, nenhuma dispensa a sua acoteia. Se estivessem caidas de branco poderiamos pensar que estavamos no Al-Gharb (Algarve).
Toda a estrutura e' fragil, demasiado fragil. Parecem torroes de terra enormes, na iminencia de se desfazarem num dia de muita chuva. Felizmente, quase nada chove por estes lados.
Foi um passeio bonito, refrescante e interessante.
Diriyyah is unquestionably the main attraction of Riyadh. By car it takes about 20 minutes to reach the place from the hotel. As it seems everything started here. Historically, the town is in the origin of the Saudi Royal family, the Al-Saud, and it was also here that took place the conquest of the Arabian Pensinsula leading to the formation of Saudi Arabia as we know it nowadays.
It's said that the town was founded in 1446 (sligthly older than Goa). The city prospered and gained importance. Unfortunately, in 1816 as a result of the war against the Otoman Empire the city was destroyed, the population dispersed, and their leaders executed.
The old Diriyyah is certainly a site of historical interest. In its entrance there is a mosk: an imponent and beautiful one. There really isn't much to say about the new part of town.
The old Diriyyah looks exactly the way you see in the pictures. The houses are made of clay, earth-level and very cool in the inside. Some of them try to have a second floor, but the overall structure is too fragile to handle the extra weight. However, all of them have their terrace. If they were painted white, you could easily believe you were in the Al-Gharb (Algarve).
In general, the structure is fragile, too fragile, as if everything would come apart with a strong rain. Luckly, it doesn't rain much around here. Indeed, this was a nice place to visit.

Abaixo podem ver mais algumas fotografias de Riade. Como se verifica a cidade e' plana e a construccao esta longe de ser em altura, a excepcao da Torre do Reino e da Torre Al-Faisalia.
Na terceira fotografia resolvi enquandrar com maior detalhe uma mesquita. Se na Europa estamos habituados a ver igrejas em cada esquina, na Arabia Saudita, proliferam mesquitas.
Hoje 'e quarta-feira, ou seja, amanha comeca o fim-de-semana! Bom fim-de-semana!
I've decided to include some more photos of Riyadh so you can get a better feeling of how the city looks like. In the photos it becomes clear that the city is very flat, and that excluding the Kingdom Tower and the Al-Faisalia tower all the building are low-rise.
In the third picture I've decided to photograph with greater detail a small, local mosk. In Europe we find churchs around every corner, in Saudi Arabia we find mosks.
Today is wednesday, ie, tomorrow is the first day of week-end. Have a nice week-end!

Almoco arabe/Arab lunch
Finalmente os meus colegas levaram-me a uma verdadeira experiencia etnografica: almoco num restaurante arabe. E assim foi. A sala de refeicoes e' o que se ve. Basicamente um rectangulo com um tapete a ocupar toda a area do chao. 'A volta almofadas e mais almofadas que, combinadas com o tapete do chao, garantiam absoluto conforto ao cliente.
A comida foi borrego com arroz que e', ao que parece, tradicional destas zonas. Como nao poderia deixar de ser veio para a "mesa", isto e', para o tapete uma estrutura metalica de pe de onde todos nos nos serviamos; com as maos e' claro! Nao e' necessario dizer que comiamos todos do mesmo prato!
A decoracao da sala era simples, mas muito bonita e, sobretudo muito confortavel. Gostava imenso de ter tirado uma fotografia a um dos criados, mas nao foi possivel (assim aconselha a prudencia).
Gostei imenso da experiencia porque foi essencialmente diferente de tudo o que eu ja tinha visto. Ha coisas que estranho(amos) imenso, mas que ainda sao nao posso deixar de as viver.
I've finally been through a truly ethnographic experience: having lunch in an arab restaurant. The pictures bellow show all the details. The dinning room is a huge squared room with a carpet covering the entire floor. All around, there are pillows and more pillows, that in combination with the carpet, guarantee absolute confort to the customer.
For lunch we had mutton with rice which is, so my colleagues said, something very traditional around here. Obviously the food was served in a metal structure from which we served ourselves using our hands, and it was shared by everyone.
The room decoration though simple, was very nice, and above all confortable. I wish I had taken a picture of one of the servants (they were wearing some traditional costumes), but it wasn't worth potential trouble.
To sum up, I can only say that I found it a very interesting experience worthwhile going through.

Sempre pensei encontrar em Riade uma urbe moderna de edificios imponentes, mas a verdade e' que Riade nao e' nada disso. Em geral a cidade e' feia e ate' desinteressante, sem qualquer tipo de charme. No entanto, e ainda assim, ha dois edificios que sao
absolutamente fantasticos e dignos de nota. Um deles e' a torre Al-Faisalia (de onde tirei estas fotografias e que prometo fotografar brevemente) e o outro e' a torre do Reino (Kingdom Tower).
A torre do Reino e' absolutamente fantastica e as fotos nao fazem justica 'a imponencia do edificio. E' uma estrutura unica que tentarei fotografar, se nao for interceptado pela policia.
I think we all had in our minds the idea that Riyadh would be an extremely modern city, with outstanding buildings. However, this is very far from the reality. In general the city is uninteresting, lacking charm, and in a way somewhat run-down.
However, it has two building that are absolutely fantastic. The Kingdom Tower (which you can see in the photos) and Al-Faisalia Tower (which soon will also be in this blog).
The Kingdom Tower is far greater than I'll ever be able to fotograph and, in my opinion, a master piece of architecture and engineering. The photos are far from living up to its mighty structure. In the future, I'll try to take some more pictures of it.

Algures no deserto/Somewhere in the desert
Na quinta-feira (fim-de-semana por estes lados) alguns colegas meus do escritorio resolveram organizar uma churrascada no deserto e convidaram-me. Como nao poderia deixar de ser aceitei. Foi uma experiencia unica...
O deserto e' isso mesmo. Um deserto. Nao ha grande coisa a relatar. Ficamos relativamente perto de Riade porque ha' o problema das cobras e dos sauditas! Nesta zona o deserto nao e' de areia, como normalmente se afigura no nosso imaginario, mas simplesmente de pedra, terra, e pouco mais.
A comida, o frango, estava divinal. Nao sei se era da fome, ou do tempero, mas efectivamente soube-me muitissimo bem. O tempero era a base de iogurte e especiarias (como tudo por estes lados), mas ainda assim conseguiu sair um pouco do "gosto padrao" que impera por estas zonas.
Actividades eram poucas: basicamente conversar, ouvir musica e jogar cartas. O frio era imenso. Acho que ja ha muitos anos nao tinha tanto frio, mesmo vestindo um pulover de la e o meu blusao. Nao me lembro de ter olhado para as estrelas!
O grupo era do melhor. Na sua maioria paquistaneses, e um indiano. Simpaticos, faladores, divertidos e cordias. Efectivamente, estou numa imersao cultural-civilizacional!
Last Thursday (1st day of the week-end) some of my colleagues from work decided to organize a barbacue at the desert and kindly invited me. Obviously, I didn't hesitate and immediately accepted it. It was certainly a different experience.
There really isn't much I can tell you about the desert since there isn't much there! The desert aound Riyadh is not made of sand (as one would expect), but of stone and hard land. We didn't make it too far out, either.
For dinner we had chicken and it tasted good. It was marinated in yogourt and spices (I've been told :)
Then, we listened to music (Jawad playing the guitar), we chatted and played cards. One note of interest was the cold. It was amazingly cold and I can't remember being that cold for a long time, even though I had a wool pullover and a strong coat!
The group was really nice. Most of the guys are from Pakistan and one from India. I'm going through a Urdu-language crunch course! :)
